Small trees.
Leaves widely elliptic to suborbicular, 3.5–5.5 cm long, 2.5–4 cm broad, obtuse or sometimes acute, base rounded to acute, margins indistinctly and minutely denticulate, membranaceous, densely covered with brownish stellate pubescence on both surfaces, lateral nerves 5 or 6; petiole ca. 3 mm long.
Inflorescences subracemose, axillary, branches brownish stellate-tomentose; calyx distinctly 5-denticulate; corolla tube 3 mm long, lobes lanceolate to oblong, ca. 8.5 mm long and 2.5 mm broad, brownish stellate-tomentose outside, nearly glabrous within except at apex.
Styrax matsumuraei closely resembles S. formosana Matsumura but the leaves are much more densely stellate-tomentose beneath.
